The first half of 2011 signaled good news for FRA, with passenger traffic and airfreight up 8.3 percent and 1 percent, respectively. Other areas of growth included accumulated maximum takeoff weights and aircraft movements, rising a respective 7.1 percent and 6.7 percent, respectively, since the beginning of 2011.
Still, June airfreight numbers were down considerably from 2010. Although FRA handled 180,000 metric tonnes of cargo last month, the airport posted a year-over-year decrease of 6.4 percent.
A key reason for this decline, according to Fraport Group, is that 2011 numbers simply can’t keep up with last year’s post-recession growth. “The recent decline is also attributable to a slight drop in cargo traffic with Asia, following the countercyclical and anti-inflationary measures in China and the impact of the earthquake in Japan,” a company press release said.
Either way, airfreight growth at FRA was immense last year. Handling 2,231,348 metric tonnes of cargo — a 20.5 percent jump from 2009 — FRA also saw a 2.9 percent jump in maximum takeoff weight.
