- Qatar Airways has commenced services to Kilimanjaro, part of its ongoing expansion into Africa. On October 31, the airline will launch routings to Maputo, Mozambique. KLM has also launched a new service into Africa, announcing the start of thrice-weekly flights to Harare, Zimbabwe, will begin in October. The Zimbabwean city will be served along with another new destination, Lusaka, Zambia.
- Boeing has delivered a 747-8 freighter to Nippon Cargo Airlines, and the carrier is already planning for its first-ever biofuel flight, tracing a course across the Pacific Ocean. The trip will be fueled by a blend of jet kerosene and recycled cooking oil.
- US Airways officials say last quarter’s profit of $321 million passed the highest quarterly profit in history and is a 203-percent, year-over-year, increase. But the result happened in spite of cargo activity. In the second quarter, cargo operating revenue declined, year-over-year, by 10.7 percent; cargo operating revenue for the first six months of 2012 is now trailing 2011’s results by 8.4 percent. In contrast to cargo’s operating revenue, numbers for mainline and express passenger revenue were up in the second quarter by 7.3 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively.
