Delta Air Lines said it is on schedule for the $1.2 billion construction of Terminal 4 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Scheduled to open in 2013, the expanded terminal will feature nine new international gates in Concourse B. “Delta’s expanded and enhanced Terminal 4 at JFK will provide a modern international gateway for millions of travelers and accommodate future growth for Delta in New York,” Gail Grimmett, Delta’s senior vice president for New York, said in a statement. What’s more, Grimmett maintains, the economic implications of the expansion are numerous. “The project will create 10,000 jobs in the region and $1.6 billion in economic output from the purchase of goods and services by 2014,” she said. Once renovated, Terminal 4 will feature a new automated baggage-handling system, dual taxiways, and expanded baggage claim and Customs and Border Protection areas. The Concourse B extension also seeks to expedite the screening process by increasing capacity at security checkpoints. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Chris Ward calls the project a game-changer for his clients and the region’s aviation sector. “It increases JFK’s capacity, vastly improves the customer experience for hundreds of thousands of Delta travelers, and strengthens the economic competitiveness of the most important gateway in the country,” he said in a statement.
