- FedEx has completed its acquisition of MultiPack. FedEx Express COO Michael L. Ducker believes the procurement of the Mexico City-based company will enable FedEx to grow its transportation and logistics operations in Mexico. “FedEx is expanding its footprint in order to better meet the demands of Mexican businesses, and responding to the growth potential of this dynamic economy,” Ducker said in a statement. The transportation and logistics company has also donated one MD-10 cargo aircraft to Orbis International, a philanthropic organization dedicated to preventing blindness. Orbis International, which has a long-standing relationship with FedEx, will utilize the freighter as its third-generation Flying Eye Hospital.
- Korean Air has purchased two additional Next-Generation 737-900ER aircraft from Boeing. The carrier, which is in the midst of revamping its fleet, currently operates two of these planes. “Korean Air completed its cabin refurbishment project for mid- to long-haul flights early this year, and is the first airline in Northeast Asia to operate a super jumbo A380 service since June,” airline officials said in a statement. “By adopting the next generation B737-800 aircraft, Korean Air aims to further improve its premium service strategy.” The order is valued at $171.6 million.
- Boeing has spoken out about the July 28 Asiana Airlines cargo plane crash that occurred 66 miles west of Jeju, South Korea, killing the pilot and co-pilot. “The Boeing Company wishes to extend its profound condolences to the families and friends of the crewmembers involved in the Asiana Airlines 747-400 freighter accident off the coast of South Korea,” the aircraft manufacturer said in a statement. En route to Shanghai Pudong International Airport from Incheon International Airport, the jumbo jet crashed into the ocean after the pilot reported mechanical issues. Boeing and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board are currently helping the Korea Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board investigate the incident.
- American Airlines announced a 5.6 percent year-over-year cargo drop in July. These figures are relatively consistent with the carrier’s year-to-date numbers, which detail a 3.4 percent year-over-year decline in tonnage from January to July. Passenger traffic was up slightly for American Airlines, however. International traffic rose 5.2 percent from July 2010 on a capacity surge of 3 percent while domestic load factor matched 2010 levels.
