Shanghai Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminal Co. Ltd. (PACTL) is in the final stages of a new cool-chain facility at Shanghai Pudong Airport. The center is designed to handle perishables and pharmaceuticals in a range of temperature conditions.
Pactl expects that the facility will open by July 2015. It is currently in the process of obtaining IATA’s Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) certification for pharmaceutical logistics. The building is 37,673 square feet, with room to expand by 5,381 square feet for storage space.
The deep freeze area will be a chilly zero degrees Fahrenheit, several cool storage areas will be set at 39 degrees to 46 degrees Fahrenheit and an ambient temperature storage zone will be set at 59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The center also features an acceptance area with separate X-ray machines and a 16,145 square-foot handling area for quick break-downs and a designated delivery area.
Pactl is considering installing 10-foot lower-deck refrigerated dollies and making them available to ramp handlers for use in transporting items between the apron stands and the warehouse. In between flights, handlers may also be able to store perishables at these temperature-controlled apron stands.
The new facility will be fully integrated into Pactl’s IT system, reporting status updates and location information, as well as business intelligence data.
IATA’s standards for CEIV certification are based on several Good Distribution Practices (GDP) in addition to temperature control regulations.
