American Science and Engineering, Inc., a company that provides threat and contraband detection machines for use in aviation and other industries, has developed a new “Z Portal” system that is able to scan cargo in ULDs and trucks. The company said that this latest detector is more compact than previous scanner models, which improves image quality and allows for higher throughput, even in space-constrained locations.
These advanced X-ray inspection systems are used to detect explosives, narcotics, illegal immigration and trade fraud. The new system is improved by capturing dual-energy transmission, which, with the existing technology, highlights organic and metallic inconsistencies. This gives operators more information about the contents of the ULD or vehicle. In use with vehicles, it can screen up to 250 trucks per hour without sacrificing image quality. The company said the system is safe for drivers, operators, scanned cargo and the environment.
