Philippines-based carrier Cebu Pacific Air and logistics company Cargohaus, Inc. have joined together to open the first-of-its-kind cargo inspection portal at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. The Smiths Detection CIP-300 – the first such imaging unit to be installed in an Asian airport – will be for Cebu Pacific’s priority use for all transshipment cargo that is loaded on international flights to and from Manila.
The CIP-300 machine can screen up to nine tonnes of air cargo dolleys and unit load devices. Powered by a low-energy X-ray generator and using advanced material discrimination software, it can provide high-quality images of freight and baggage contents without the time and effort needed to open each container.
Designed as a stationary system, the CIP-300 is large enough to drive a car through and produces images sharp enough to reveal hidden threats such as explosives, or smuggled goods and even stowaways. The system was adapted from its initial use in public buildings, public and private utilities, military sites, ports and border crossings.
The cargo inspection portal is in Terminal 3 at NAIA. CEB Cargo serves 34 domestic and 27 international destinations. The carrier extends its service with transshipments through 21 interline global partners.
