DHL’s hub outside Cincinnati is about to get a US$108 million facelift. The global logistics company plans to invest in its facilities at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG) by adding new gates to accommodate more aircraft, increasing warehouse space and installing new equipment to expedite sorting of shipments and unloading/loading planes.
The CVG hub is one of three global DHL hubs. It processes approximately 46 million international shipments annually, with flights bound for the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Latin America. The hub also connects nearly 100 service centers, as well as gateways in Los Angeles, New York and Miami. The integrator’s other global hubs are in Leipzig, Germany, and Hong Kong.
Established in 2009, the CVG hub will benefit from a combined total of $280 million worth of investments by DHL over the last six years. Staff in the Cincinnati facility has grown from 1,600 in late 2009 to about 2,000 presently. DHL expects to complete the expansion of the CVG hub late this year.
In the past 18 months, DHL has announced a series of major investments in infrastructure, including $200 million to double the Leipzig hub, $85 million in a new Southeast Asia hub in Singapore, and $177 million to expand its program in the Middle East and North Africa. Additionally, DHL is modernizing its fleet with more efficient freighters with increased capacity.
