DHL Express opens new facilities in Budapest Airport ‘BUD:2020’ program

DHL Express has expanded its operations at Budapest Airport as part of the €160 million “BUD:2020” development program at the airport, which includes the addition of warehouse and office complexes on an area covering about 60,000 square meters.

The new expansion includes a 15-year lease between DHL Express and Budapest Airport, said DHL Express Hungary’s managing director, Zoltán Bándli. He added that DHL Express’ new space at the airport includes 6,000 square meters of warehouse capacity, with high-tech sorting technology and automated shipment processing. The expansion will allow DHL to process more than 6,000 pieces per hour, “which is three times our current capacity,” he added.

The new facilities, located adjacent to Terminal 1 at the airport, will be supported by more than 600 employees and expand Budapest Airport’s cargo handling capacity to 250,000 tonnes per year. The airport reported 72,161 tonnes of air cargo handled between January and July 2017, for a 19.6 percent increase from the same period in 2016.

The next phase of the airport’s cargo expansion is the development of its Cargo City next to Terminal 2, which has a scheduled completion date in 2019.
