There are various areas in which forwarders can make a positive contribution to the air cargo footprint, including, for example:
- Carrier selection: Monitoring, recognizing and rewarding (through the allocation of volumes) the carriers that demonstrate the greatest commitment to improving their carbon efficiency;
- Efficiency: Doing a better job of shipment consolidation, selection of routes and aircraft types that deliver more revenue tonne kilometers and generate lower emissions per tonne, and ensuring better utilization of the capacity that is available through information-sharing, planning and forecasting;
- Consultation: Both in terms of consulting their customers and partners on how they can improve their carbon footprint, and by contributing their expertise to industry associations and organizations that are working to address carbon emissions in aviation;
- Reporting: Helping customers and carriers to better understand the emissions that are being generated for shipments so that they can better manage their footprint;
- Offsetting: Offering carbon offsetting mechanisms within their product portfolio, with green products or surcharges, for example.
