Approximately 1,000 camp beds were flown to Frankfurt from Washington D.C. Tuesday, by Lufthansa Cargo in partnership with the German Red Cross, for the benefit of the refugees fleeing conflict in their home countries. The beds were urgently needed in Germany because all available beds in Europe are occupied.
The German Red Cross and Lufthansa have flown more than 15,000 camp beds in the past few days over 12 flights. The carrier transported the beds, which were provided by the Canadian and the American Red Cross, at cost. The total volume of the cargo was nearly 120 tonnes, divided between 271 pallets.
Christian Reuter, the German Red Cross general secretary said that the German organization is attending to more than 288 emergency shelters for approximately 82,000 refugees nationwide. Lufthansa CEO Peter Gerber said the airline was happy to make a small contribution to the work of the German Red Cross.
