- Emirates marked its inaugural flight to Brussels, Belgium. The new daily service using a Boeing 777-200LR will offer up to 17 tonnes of cargo capacity per day. Key export commodities include pharmaceuticals, automotive spare parts, chocolates, machinery and equipment and electronics.
- AIT Worldwide Logistics marked its 35th anniversary as a company. From beginnings as a freight forwarding start-up based in Chicago, AIT has evolved to become a global supply chain management provider serving customers on six continents.
- Boeing and United Airlines are celebrating the delivery of the airline’s first 787-9 Dreamliner. United will become the first airline in North America to operate both the 787-8 and 787-9 variants of the Dreamliner family when the airline launches 787-9 service later this month.
- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a US$132,425 civil penalty against Mountain Air Cargo of Denver, N.C., for operating an airplane when it was not in compliance with federal aviation regulations. The FAA alleges Mountain Air Cargo mechanics improperly repaired a dent in a cargo door at the rear of the aircraft in August 2012.
- Dr. Andreas Otto, board member product & sales at Lufthansa Cargo, will become the new chief commercial officer of Austrian Airlines as of Oct. 1. Otto will succeed Karsten Benz, who is returning to the Lufthansa Group.
- Seattle Tacoma International Airport is the first airport in North America to be certified for reducing carbon emissions by Airports Council International.
- Cathay Pacific Airways and CHEP Aerospace Solutions, a provider of ULD services, signed a five-year renewable agreement for the supply and management of ULDs and pallet accessories. CHEP will acquire Cathay Pacific’s fleet of 25,000 ULDs and supply a fleet of lightweight containers.
- Panalpina merged its Panprojects and Oil & Gas activities to create Panalpina Energy Solutions, a specialized service that designs transport services for energy projects.
- Ground handler Bahrain Airport Services Co. selected air transport IT specialist, SITA, to automate staff rostering and allocation at Bahrain International Airport in a new five-year deal.
- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) selected four unleaded fuels for the first phase of testing. The goal is for government and industry to work together to have a new unleaded fuel that reduces lead emissions for aviation by 2018. Shell and TOTAL, with one fuel each, and Swift Fuels, with two fuels, will now work with the FAA on phase-one testing, which will begin this fall and conclude in fall 2015.
- UPS is leasing almost 500,000 square feet (46,451 square meters) from Hillwood Properties in Fort Worth’s Alliance Gateway I. The new distribution center is expected to open in November.
- By opening a new office in Hamburg and promoting two new office managers, C.H. Robinson continues to expand its European footprint.
- ST Engineering announced that VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering, Inc. and the City of Pensacola signed an agreement to set up an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at Pensacola International Airport in Pensacola, Fla.
- DHL Supply Chain announced the construction of a new mega-warehouse in Shah Alam, Malaysia. This facility will cater to the growing demands of the fast-moving consumer goods, technology and retail markets.
- IAG Cargo and Exelsius, a cold chain management consultancy, teamed up to provide the health care industry with a certificated training workshop in good distribution practices. The introductory workshop will be in London on Nov. 11-12.
- Hactl, a Hong Kong-based cargo handler, received the Gold Award in the Safety Management System category of the 13th annual Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health (HKOSH) Awards.
