FedEx Express moves into new facility at Newcastle International Airport

FedEx Express recently moved into a new facility at Newcastle International Airport (NCL) in the United Kingdom, expanding its operational footprint to meet the region’s growing cargo demand. The facility is equipped with technology that will allow on-site sorting and package scanning, according to today’s release. The exact size of the facility was not disclosed, and FedEx and NCL were unavailable for comment ahead of publication. [caption id="attachment_94156" align="alignright" width="387"] Photo/FedEx[/caption] The site also supports FedEx’s 737-400 aircraft, which is three times larger than the ATR 72 aircraft currently operating for FedEx at NCL, according to the release. In turn, the larger aircraft adds roughly 149,000 pounds (68 tonnes) of additional capacity per week. FedEx currently operates four weekly outbound flights and four inbound flights to and from NCL, with plans to add an additional weekly trip to its outbound flights. Despite some challenges due to Brexit , operators like FedEx have continued to expand operations in England as airfreight demand picks up. In February, FedEx launched a four-times-weekly route connecting Indianapolis (IND) to East Midlands Airport (EMA) to create additional capacity for U.K. exporters transporting e-commerce shipments to the U.S. Alibaba’s logistics arm, Cainiao, last week added capacity between Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and London (LHR) on existing passenger flights. Meanwhile, ground services provider dnata bolstered its operations at LHR with a new 10,500-square-meter facility this month . The U.K.’s top three cross-border countries for e-commerce shipments include China, the U.S. and Germany, according to Cargo Facts Consulting’s e-commerce dashboard . FedEx ranked No. 1 in Air Cargo World’s latest Freight 50 ranking , based on 2020 tonnage.
