Icelandair Cargo will begin weekly frequencies from Boston’s Logan Airport to its hub in Keflavik, Iceland, starting Jan. 22.
The new service was added to meet increased demand for fresh seafood from Iceland. “We have seen a year-on-year increase in seafood volumes to the U.S. market every year from 2011,” said Icelandair Cargo managing director, Gunnar Mar Sigurfinnsson.
Although the carrier has twice-weekly freighter calls at New York’s JFK, and daily passenger flights to Boston and JFK, Boston is its largest market for seafood, Sigurfinnsson said. Icelandair Cargo will test this schedule until Easter, at which point the carrier will re-evaluate.
This move will establish Icelandair Cargo as the only carrier offering a scheduled all-cargo freighter service from Boston Logan to Europe. A 757-200 will be used for the route, which will depart Boston on Thursday nights, arriving in Keflavik Friday mornings, with same-day connections to Europe.
Once in Keflavik, Icelandair offers continued cargo service to Liege, Belgium, and the East Midlands, U.K. Belly capacity on its passenger network connects to 26 cities in Scandinavia, the U.K. and mainland Europe. Additionally, Icelandair Cargo provides extensive cargo services to Greenland and the Faroe Islands through an agreement with Air Iceland
