In addition to acquiring Drude Logistik’s logistics center, which features a 23,616-square-foot transshipment terminal with 105 loading bays, K + N will obtain its 37,720-square-foot warehouse. These facilities, along with Drude Logistik’s handling capabilities, will enable K + N to operate daily service to 50 economic centers across Europe.
To Kuehne + Nagel International AG Executive Vice President Dirk Reich, it’s a proficiency that is completely in line with K + N’s goal of establishing a European hub. “Through the acquisition of Drude Logistik, we get access to a highly capable hub operation for our international groupage activities,” he said in a statement. “Drude Logistik fully meets our requirements regarding expertise, geographical position and infrastructure.”
Reich also points to the future implications of the acquisition. “Acting as our new Eurohub, it enables us to increase the number of departures, reduce lead times and achieve a better capacity utilization due to a consistent consolidation and overnight transshipment operations,” he stated. “As a result, all Kuehne + Nagel locations linked to the Eurohub will benefit from improved service levels.”
The new routing will be finalized by the middle of 2012, Reich said. K + N currently routes all shipments through its Haiger, Germany hub, although capacity constraints hindered further expansion at this location.
