As demand for airfreight in India continues to expand, Oman Air and Cargolux, which have a cooperative agreement, have added a second freighter flight between Chennai, India, and Muscat, Oman. The cooperation was originally set up so the two carriers could access new freighter destinations, while contributing to the growth of Oman’s logistics hub.
The agreement allows Cargolux to fly to new global destinations, including 11 in India, that are part of Oman Air’s network. The goal of the partnership, the carriers said, is to build on other newly launched services by expanding airfreight services from Oman to destinations in China, Europe, Africa and the United States. Mafoodh Al Harthy, chief office sales for Oman Air, said he hoped the new route will become “a cornerstone for the transportation of cargo between India, the Middle East and Europe.”
Niek van der Weide, executive vice president for Cargolux, said India was an important market for the all-cargo carrier and that it will look at further expansion soon, with a planned addition of Mumbai as a second destination in India. The additional service to Chennai, which is a gateway to the region’s textiles and automotive industries, began Aug. 11.
