- Stansted, UK-based charter specialist Titan Airways (pictured above) has been selected as the preferred provider by Royal Mail to continue to operate its night mail service, subject to final contracts. Titan will operate three aircraft on behalf of Royal Mail from its Stansted base from January 2014 until January 2017. The new deal will be supported by Titan’s three Boeing 737-300 aircraft and will involve nightly operations to Edinburgh and double nightly flights to Belfast.
- The International Air Transport Association certified LAN Airlines and LAN Cargo for stage 1 of the Environment Assessment System. IEnvA is a new environmental management system, designed by and for the airline industry to unify commitments, quantitative and qualitative goals and objectives, as well as implement indicators that identify, measure and manage environmental performance.
- DHL renewed its contract with turboprop aircraft manufacturer ATR for the global warehousing and inventory management of its aircraft spare parts. The three-year agreement covers a logistics service called Fast Track, which comprises worldwide distribution of critical spare parts. DHL will also handle customs clearance for the parts and equipment.
- International Federation of Freight Forwarders Association President Stanley Lim met the Turkish press together with Turgut Erkeskin, president of the Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers. It is the national representative of Turkey in FIATA.
- AMI, a trade-only airfreight and express wholesaler, improved its online click2Ship express services with the addition of a heavyweight economy service to the U.S. for shipments from 156 to 2,204 pounds per piece. click2Ship, launched in June 2010, is an all-inclusive online express service that provides instant quotes to freight agents.
- FedEx Express added 1,900 new fuel-efficient vehicles to its fleet. In 2008, FedEx Corp. committed to improve the overall fuel efficiency of its vehicle fleet 20 percent by 2020, as compared with its 2005 performance. In March 2013, FedEx Express surpassed this goal with a more than 22 percent cumulative improvement in fuel economy for its vehicles and set a revised goal to improve the fuel efficiency of its fleet 30 percent by 2020.
- In a conservation initiative in partnership with the Aspinall Foundation, DHL delivered a family of nine silverback gorillas (pictured left) from Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent, England to the Batéké Plateau National Park in Gabon. The gorillas were flown in a specially equipped Boeing 767 to Lagos, Nigeria, and then onto Franceville, Gabon. For the final leg of the journey, they were flown in a helicopter to the national park in collaboration with the Gabonese authorities.
- Dube TradePort, an aerotropolis home to King Shaka International Airport in Durban, South Africa, has attracted private sector investment totaling almost US$56 million. The money is an investment from Shree Property Holdings, property development company, in distribution warehousing for logistics tenants.
- Finnair opened a direct route between Helsinki and Xianyang, China. The route is flown three times a week with Airbus A330 aircraft. With this summer route opening, Finnair now covers five major cities in China with a total of 60 weekly flights: Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Xianyang.
- By the end of 2014, Deutsche Post DHL plans to open an additional 20,000 DHL parcel shops, primarily in Germany’s major metropolitan areas. Once the new shops are in operation, Deutsche Post DHL will have more than 50,000 parcel drop-off points across Germany, and the company can be found by customers everywhere.
- Boeing received Federal Aviation Administration approval to fly Required Navigation Performance – Authorization Required procedures on the 787 fleet. Operators that fly RNP AR procedures significantly reduce fuel burn, emissions and airport congestion by flying precisely along a predefined route using onboard navigation systems together with GPS-based global navigation satellite systems.
- Airbus awarded Honeywell the contract for the powerhouse operation for the A320 family assembly line that Airbus is establishing in Mobile, Ala. Honeywell will be responsible for designing, building and operating the facility that will supply all utilities to the new assembly line, including power distribution and backup generation, heating, cooling, chilled and drinking water and sewage handling. The facility also will provide compressed air, and house the building management and fire protection systems for the campus. Construction of the powerhouse is scheduled to begin in the fall.
- Geodis Wilson expanded its Asia-Pacific operations to include domestic rail freight services in China, with intercontinental services between China and Europe also planned. Freight transport by rail is growing in China.
- FedEx Express re-launched its services in Libya through Takween for Airfreight Services. Now a licensed Federal Express Global Service Provider, Takween is responsible for offering a range of FedEx services to customers in Libya, including import, export and customs clearance. Libya’s rapidly growing economy is expected to attract foreign investors.
- Logwin, a global logistics services provider, deployed a new tracking system. The new Logwin Order Tracking System has order tracking, an event tool and data management.
- C&A, a fashion and apparel manufacturer, has extended its partnership with Kuehne + Nagel that started in 2006. According to the agreement, Kuehne + Nagel will continue to handle the company’s retail logistics, which includes quality inspections as well as intercontinental airfreight and seafreight services. Kuehne + Nagel is handling C&A’s flat packed and garment-on-hanger shipments from factories in south, central and north China.
