- A Volga-Dnepr Airlines An-124-100 Ruslan freighter delivered the Luch-5V and KazSat-3 telecommunications satellites from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, to Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome. The satellites, weighing a combined 21 tonnes, were secured inside a special shipping container. The flight also carried support equipment for the satellites.
- Agility, a global logistics provider, was awarded the contract to provide logistics services at the Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) events in 2015 and 2017 in London. DSEI is a defense and security supply chain exhibition.
- Edmonton International Airport celebrated the first American Airlines non-stop flight to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The new service will operate daily with an A319 aircraft.
- The Federal Aviation Administration dedicated a new air traffic control facility to better handle the expected growth in flight operations in the Houston area. The Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) replaces an outdated structure that was commissioned more than 40 years ago. The new TRACON is located on 21 acres of land at George Bush Intercontinental Airport that is being leased from the City of Houston at no cost.
- Smiths Detection’s new CIP-300 Car Inspection Portal will be installed at Manila International Airport’s Terminal 3 to scan cargo trolleys as they travel to and from aircraft. The contract, with Filipino freight handling and warehousing company Cargohaus, will allow the trolleys to be checked for hidden weapons, explosives, drugs or other contraband, and stowaways.
- Saudi Airlines Cargo received the Top Cargo Airline Performance award for the third consecutive year at the annual Brussels Airport Aviation Awards.
- Boeing delivered 161 commercial airplanes during the first quarter of 2014. The leading plane was the 737 Next Generation with 115 aircraft delivered. Next came the 777 with 24 aircraft delivered.
- For the second year in a row, C.H. Robinson received the Community Impact Award in the Workplace Giving Campaign category from Minnesota Business magazine. The award recognizes a successful volunteer or employee-giving campaign benefiting any non-profit or other worthy organization. This year, C.H. Robinson was presented the award for its 14 years of support for the MinnDakotas chapter of JDRF, a global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.
- Boeing and Kenya Airways marked the delivery of the carrier’s first 787 Dreamliner. The airplane departed Paine Field in Everett for a nonstop flight to Kenya Airways’ base in Nairobi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
- The Elite Association of Logistic Networks (ELITE) has become the latest global association to endorse the International Air Transport Association’s Multilateral e-Air Waybill Agreement. ELITE represents more than 6,200 independent freight forwarder members in 191 countries.
- C.H. Robinson launched The Road, a blog that features topics and issues that affect daily life in the transportation industry, especially in trucking. The Road features weekly posts authored by C.H. Robinson employees and industry experts.
- Belgian low-cost carrier Jetairfly launched direct service to Brussels from Miami International Airport. The twice-weekly service for Jetairfly’s first U.S. route will use a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
- Shanghai Pudong Int’l Airport Cargo Terminal Co., Ltd. (PACTL) upgraded to the Hermes version 4.6 air cargo management service at its cargo facilities.
- Warburg Pincus, a global private equity firm, signed an agreement with dnata, an air services provider, to acquire a majority stake in Dubai-based mercator, a provider of software and technology-enabled outsourcing services to the aviation and air cargo industry. dnata will retain a minority stake.
- Panalpina is the first global logistics company to gain accreditation for its lean training program. This comes two years after the company’s logistics division set out to incorporate lean manufacturing principles into its global operations. The Lean Competency System accreditation was developed in partnership with Cardiff University in the UK.
- ST Aerospace recorded new orders worth US$460 million (333 million euros) in the first quarter of 2014.
