Today, Airport Authority Hong Kong and Alibaba Group announced their commitment to collaborate in building a global smart logistics hub at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). The right to develop and manage the hub at the world’s busiest cargo airport was awarded earlier this year to a joint venture led by Cainiao Network, the logistics arm of Alibaba.
The planned site for the logistics center occupies about 5.3 hectares, with an estimated gross floor area of 38,000 square meters. The hub will include large scale robotics and automation, as well as temperature-controlled features, and is scheduled to commence operation in 2023.
The development signals a continuation of the airport’s efforts to expand capacity and digitalize operations, to support fast-growing cross border e-commerce trade. For Cainiao, the joint venture marks the sixth, and final, hub in its global eHub network.
